The highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest in the Himalayas, is named after Welshman Sir George Everest from Crickhowell. Sir George worked on the trigonometrical survey of India from 1806 to 1843, became superintendent of the survey in 1823 and surveyor general of India in 1830. He was knighted in 1861.
