2006 Marine Corps Marathon. Another PR….just!

Filed under: Running — Steve Speirs @ 7:36 am

MCM 2006

It’s been a couple of days since the race, and I’m only just getting a chance to write a brief report of Sunday’s Marine Corps Marathon. First of all, I have to say I’m ecstatic to get another marathon PR (my 3rd of 2006). Going into the race I knew I had a good shot at it, and my form in the early miles confirmed this. However, looking back at how things unfolded, I can’t help but think “If only”…..

What a difference a year makes…

Filed under: Running — Steve Speirs @ 9:14 am

This time last year, the entry in my running log read “Looks like Marine Corps is almost an impossibilty now. There’s been no improvement with the IT band and my only hope is to start the race and try to hobble through the pain”.

Actually, I didn’t attempt the marathon. I picked up my race number and other goodies at the expo, but once back at the hotel room decided I’d be a fool to even try and start the race. Looking back, it was probably the best thing that could have happened. Several weeks of little or no running was as much good for me mentally as it was physically. After following Allyson around DC in her quest for marathon #6 (on the Metro I might add!), I set several goals in my mind for the following year.

Number one was just to get some consistent running under my belt in the hope of building a good base.
Number two was to try and PR at the Shamrock Marathon in March 06.
Number three was to go back to DC next year and try again.

Easy run with 2 miles @ marathon goal pace

Easy run

Tonight’s run was just an easy 4 or 5 miles, but I wanted to include a couple of miles at marathon goal pace (6:30) in my race shoes – the Brooks Racer ST 2. I ran the first mile with my daughter Shannon, who was just coming off a great 3rd place in the Beach District Cross Country Meet, and now looking forward to Regionals next week. I quickly stepped up the pace and was surprised to see a 6:08 split on my Garmin. It didn’t feel that fast, so I stepped it up a little for the next mile, which I completed in 5:56. This one felt good too and it was nice to jog back to the house feeling quite good about things.

race – the Hair of the Dog 5k to be held on New Year’s Day, 2007 at 10:00am. The venue is Mount Trashmore, Virginia Beach.

The race will be held entirely on the paved running trails within the Park. The route will make one small loop around the Mount Trashmore hills and one long loop around the lake. Unusually for Trashmore, the course is flat and fast!

In typical KaleRunning fashion, they’ve added a couple of novel twists to the race to the make it a fun and exciting New Year’s event for the whole family:

What happened to VirtuRace.com?

Filed under: Running — Steve Speirs @ 9:25 pm

VirtuRace.com becoming AthlinksA couple of months ago I stumbled across an interesting web site that somehow had listed several of my recent (and not so recent) race results. You can easily create a free profile and claim races as “yours” from a generated list. If you don’t recognize a race, you can inform VirtuRace of any mismatches and they’ll delete it from your profile. It’s an interesting idea to see all your recent performances in one place, and you can submit race results that are missing from their database using a simple online form. I even submitted a csv file listing several results from 2006 which was uploaded and on the site within a few days. There’s also a feature that lists your “rivals” – runners you’ve races head-to-head against at least 3 times – and compares finish times.

Marine Corps Marathon pace band

Filed under: Running — Steve Speirs @ 5:43 pm

Marathon Pace BandWell, with race day less than a week away, I find myself thinking about the marathon and planned race pace. I decided on a two week taper and therefore didn’t run many miles at all last week – a total of 29 with a longest run of 10 miles yesterday. I don’t feel 100% ready, but then again I don’t think anyone does during the taper. All kinds of nagging doubts creep in and you have to keep reminding yourself you’ve done all you can at this stage (assuming you actually have done all you can of course!). One of my usual pre-race rituals is to print off a marathon pace band, which outlines each mile split based on expected finish time. Here’s how you can get your own band… (more…)

just a couple of weeks away I found myself on the starting line of yet another 5k. I ran the All American Beach Ford 5k a couple of years ago and remember it as a fast, flat (aren’t they all in Virginia Beach!) course through a quiet neighborhood. Perfect for a Saturday morning time-trial.

Well, Dean Karnazes aka “Marathon Man” has reached the halfway point in the North Face Endurance 50 perkins 14 movie – his latest marathon at Baton Rouge, Louisiana taking 3:59:27.

How he keeps going, day after day is beyond me, but so far so good. Nothing seems to be falling apart at the moment, aside from a few nagging knee issues download unlawful entry online . Hope he can stay injury free for the remaining 25 marathons.
