Joe Calzaghe Roy Jones Jr Update
Last week I mentioned the possibility of Welsh boxer Joe Calzaghe fighting Roy Jones Jr at Madison Square Garden later this year. Seems like the possibility has turned into reality.
According to the BBC Sport web site:
Roy Jones Jr has confirmed he and undefeated Welshman Joe Calzaghe will clash at Madison Square Garden, New York on Saturday 20 September.
with the American legend and Welsh wonder splitting the profit straight down the middle.
Madison Square Garden was chosen as a better venue than another Las Vegas hotel fight. Jones added:
Vegas was on the radar, but it’s easier to get a flight to New York. When Joe fought in Vegas, I ran into a lot of people who weren’t happy with the arrangements and the way they had to go through all the stops to get there.
The Garden is also steeped in boxing history with many of the biggest names in the sport - Ali, Leonard, Foreman, and Marciano - having boxed there. For Calzaghe the very large Italian-American population in Manhattan is a big attraction too.
Should be a classic encounter! I can hardly wait…
