Dark Horse Wales Seals The 2008 The Triple Crown
Against all odds, Wales have just defeated Ireland in Dublin to win the 2008 Triple Crown.
Minutes after referee blew the final whistle, Welsh man of the match Shane Williams said:
That’s probably the hardest game so far - the last five minutes was the longest five minutes of my life.
From the BBC match summary by Phil Harlow:
Wales sealed the Triple Crown and kept their Grand Slam dreams alive with a hard-fought win over Ireland in Dublin.
Ronan O’Gara’s kicks gave Ireland a 6-3 half-time lead, while Shane Horgan was stopped inches short of the line.
Despite having two players sin-binned, Wales dominated the second half with Shane Williams’s record-equalling 40th Test try putting his side ahead.
Ireland closed to within a point, but James Hook’s late penalty sealed a famous win for Warren Gatland’s side.
Now the attention switches to the Grand Slam which is up for grabs against France next weekend.
Wales coach Warren Gatland said:
The Triple Crown is nice, that’s step one, but the most important thing is the championship and we’ve got a chance of winning it and the Grand Slam as well so next week is going to be really important.
There is going to be a lot of hype and expectation.
But Gatland warned that France’s visit to the Millennium Stadium on Saturday will probably be Wales’ toughest test.
I think France will come and play a lot more rugby. So defensively, there’s a lot of work for us to do.
Whatever the outcome, Gatland believes he has a team in the making that can go on to be a force to be reckoned with. Great news for Wales and their loyal band of supporters!
