Hay-on-Wye - “The Town of Books”
The little town of Hay, found on the River Wye in Wales, only has a population of 1,900, but is world renowned for it’s 40+ book stores. So much so that it’s often referred to as “The World of Books”. Even though there are some interesting antique, print and gift stores, practically every shop is devoted to books. Even the old castle in the center of town has a book store all of it’s own.
Each summer at the end of May/early June, there’s a Literature Festival which draws a claimed 80,000 visitors over a ten day period. People flock from all over to see and hear big literary names from all over the world. Hay has also been responsible for the establishment of several other “book towns” throughout Europe and the United States.
