Tommy Cooper Statue Unveiled In Wales

Tommy Cooper StatueLong-time Tommy Cooper fan, Sir Anthony Hopkins, recently unveiled a statue of the much loved comedian in Caerphilly, South Wales - the town where he was born.

Hundreds of people attended the ceremony which Hopkins kicked off by doing an impression of the late comedian, along with 20 of his best known jokes.

Cooper’s cousin Betty represented his family and told the watching crowd: “I didn’t expect this, honestly … I am very proud on behalf of my family.”

Hopkins said:

He was the comedian’s comedian because he was such a self-mockery artist and I think we, particularly in Britain, admire the underdog, the failure - and Tommy represented everything that failed.

Earlier, Sir Anthony, 70, said the statue would

commemorate not just one of my heroes, but one of the greatest comics of all time.

It took the Tommy Cooper society two years to raise the £45,000 needed to pay for the 9-ft bronze statue of their comedy idol.

Born in Caerphilly in 1921, Cooper and his family moved to Exeter while he was still young and it was there he picked up his distinctive West Country accent.

He went on to become a hugely successful magician and comedian. While he presented himself as a hapless, failed magician, he was in fact a highly skilled conjuror and a member of the Magicians Circle.
