Union Flag To Get Dragon Update?

Union Flag with Welsh Dragon

There’s been much debate this week about the call to add the Welsh Dragon to the Union Jack to represent Wales’s “true place in the Union”.

Above is my quick and dirty impression of what the flag could look like if MP Ian Lucas has his way.

Wrexham’s Labour MP said the change would truly represent the changing place of Wales within the UK.

Speaking to the House of Commons, Mr Lucas said only three nations were represented in the flag and he wanted the Red Dragon from the Welsh flag incorporated within the Union Jack.

Some people are saying it would “improve unity within the United Kingdom”, others are saying “leave things the way they are to maintain Wales’s identity”. The debate is sure to continue for a long, long time….

What are your thoughts?

On a slightly lighter note, here’s a great web site where you can design your own flag - we are multicolored. Have fun!

That’s really great! You did an excellent job on designing that. Now, if they would only accept it as official…

Hmm this is the problem with trying to be all things to everyone. You end up with rubbish! Just look at the olympic logo for a case in point. In this case it’s a flag trying to be all things and looking from a design point of view cluttered.

Even without the dragon (and a brave attempt Steve!) the flag is messy.

Perhaps we should just start from scratch have a brand new one. Now that would cause some controvesy!

I like the way you did the flag, but it would never fly. Superimposing a red dragon on one of the blue fields would though.

Hi Steve! How are you? Happy Holidays!

Cool-looking flag! You should have a flag company print your design on fabric, so you can hang it outside your house. 8-)

    11. Ed Says:

Maybe instead of a dragon, we can paint in green the blue parts at the bottom of the flag…

    12. Dudesworthy Says:

      No way!

The Welsh Dragon is an ancient and proud symbol of Wales, it has nothing to do with the Scottish and English. The British flag is associated with the British Empire and through that slavery, why would we want our Welsh Dragon to be a part of that?

If they want to add a Welsh element then it should be St. David’s Cross (a yellow cross on a black background).
