wales fact #7 - mount snowdon
At 3560ft (1085m) Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales (& England). Furthermore Snowdonia National Park National Park is the second largest National park in England and Wales, covering some 2,171 square kilometres (838 square miles) of north west Wales.

Useful information:
- Its summit is known as Yr Wyddfa (Ancient Welsh, roughly translated as “The Grave/Tomb”)
- The English name Snowdon comes from Saxon “Snow Dun”, meaning “snow hill”
- The first recorded ascent of Snowdon was by the botanist Thomas Johnson in 1639
- Snow is common and often lasts from October to early June.
- A typical climbing party will take 5 or 6 hours to climb up to the summit and navigate back down
- Seagulls, not normally seen on mountains are the most common birds spotted on mount Snowdon
- Snowdon is comprised of mainly volcanic rock, Rhyolite and Dolerite being the most common
- There are 6 main climbing paths, the Llanberis path is known to be the easist during the summer months
