Welsh Red Dragon defeats the Saxon White Dragon

dragons_small.jpg

The above photo (click for an enlarged view) was taken at Roath Park on my trip to Cardiff, Wales a few weeks ago. Actually it seems like months ago already, but that’s another story. The colorful photo features a flowerbed designed and grown by staff from Cardiff Parks Services to support the Wales in Bloom and Green Flag Award bids for 2007.

The theme of the bed depicts the 5th Century historical legend of Vortigen and the two dragons, where it’s said the Red Dragon of the Welsh defeated the White Dragon representing the Saxons.

It’s a great addition to an already beautiful park which attracts many thousands of visitors every year - well worth a visit if ever you’re in the area!

Update (7/28/07): In response to RT Cunningham’s most recent Blog Drive-By at the great Untwisted Vortex blog where he was curious to find out the size of the red dragon, I decided to post another photo which hopefully helps put some perspective on it. The black railing if I remember correctly was about 3 feet in height, therefore putting the dragon at about 12 feet tall - quite an impressive “flower statue”. As always, click on the image below for an enlarged view.
