Garmin Forerunner 305 software update 2.90
Just noticed on the Garmin web site, there’s a software update available for the Garmin Forerunner 305 (effective November 17th, 2006).
Changes made from version 2.70 to 2.90:
- Improved ability to acquire a satellite fix while moving around warming up and stretching.
- Improved satellite tracking reliability for multi-hour activities.
There’s also a note the software update will reset the 305 device clock to October 28, 2006, 23:59 UTC. To correct the date and time you’ll need to acquire a satellite fix, which may take longer than normal to obtain.
I also noticed that “improved handling of tunnel reacquisition issue” was included in the change from 2.40 to 2.70. I’m going to check what version I have loaded as this may be the cause of bad data at the Marine Corps Marathon a few weeks ago. Towards the end of the race I lost signal after going under a couple of bridges and running alongside several tall buildings. It wasn’t until the last mile of the race I was able to get a good satellite fix. Very frustrating….
UPDATE: Well I just checked my 305 and I still have version 2.40 of the software loaded, despite running the Garmin WebUpdater on a regular basis. In fact, even after running the Updater tonight, the wizard said I already had the latest version. Here’s a screenshot of the Equipment tab of my latest MotionBased activity, clearly showing “The recommended version is 2.40“.
A quick visit to the Updates & Downloads page of the Garmin web site enabled me to grab version 2.90 and update the software on my Forerunner 305. Hopefully I’ll notice an improvement the next time I use it.
UPDATE 2: Not sure why I only just figured this out, but there’s two updates available for the Forerunner 305 - Unit Software Version 2.40 and the Chipset Software Version 2.90. Hopefully that will clear up any confusion if you’ve just read the post above.

Just got my unit yesterday. The software is v2.60. GPS Chipset is v2.90.
