Is that my R56 MINI Cooper S ticking?

PW/B MINI CooperI’ve owned my 2007 MINI Cooper S for just over 6 weeks. Aside from one issue with the “Check Engine Light” coming on, it’s been a fantastic car - tons of fun and a joy to drive.

I’m still breaking it in at the moment and wondered if that had anything to do with the faint, but noticeable ticking noise I could hear when I stopped at the lights or parked in my driveway. I’d been meaning to call MINI and ask their advice, but just hadn’t got around to it.

Now the burning question has been answered for me on the awesome MotoringFile.com web site (thanks Gabe).

The quick answer is “Yes, the ticking is normal.”

The longer answer, according to Erik Sonntag, lead engineer and head of the MINI’s drivetrain development, is “The ticking sound is typical of almost all direct injection, high-output gasoline engines and the new MINI’s powerplant is no exception.”

Apparently, the benefits of direct injection over old-school fuel injection system are increased power, better power delivery, and better efficiency. Now you know.
