sun visor mini-mod

been meaning to do this for a while and finally got around to it yesterday. the inside of my JB/MCSC is mainly anthracite and chrome, so one of the things that’s been bugging me for ages is the bright yellow warning stickers on each of the sun visors.

don’t get me wrong, the airbag safety message is very important but once you’ve read it once…..

Warning Sticker

anyway, onto the mini-mod.

tools required:

  • denatured alcohol
  • clean cloth
  • protective gloves
  • phillips head screwdriver [optional]

i chose to remove the visors from the headliner before attempting to remove the stickers. two reasons for this [a] i didn’t want to drip the alcohol on any part of my MINI interior (I’ve heard it will severely damage the chrome and anthracite finish) [b] it’s advised to use the alcohol in a well ventilated area.
unscrew the 2 phillips screws on each visor and you’re free to work on them wherever you want.
pour a little alcohol onto the clean cloth, rub over the warning sticker and hold the cloth next to the sticker for a few minutes.
at first it looked like nothing was going to happen, but then with a little more alcohol and a little more rubbing, the sticker magically peeled away in one or two large ’stringy’ pieces. a small outline of the sticker was left on the visor but it’s hardly noticeable unless you look really close.

i’d also advise wearing protective gloves as the alcohol is pretty strong stuff. if you do get some on your skin, wash with soap and water immediately!

so there you have it, a great mini-mod to sharpen up the look of your interior. all it takes is 5-10 minutes and the cost of the denatured alcohol (about $4.50 a quart in your nearest Lowes or hardware store).

Hey- just wanted to say thanks for posting this. I followed your instructions last night. Didn’t take the visors off because I couldn’t figure out how to get the screw covers off and didn’t want to damage it but I put a towel on my lap and over the interior as I was working. Probably took 5 minutes like you said. Looks a lot “cleaner” inside. Thanks again!!!!!
