Less than 10 months after giving birth to baby Isla, British runner Paula Radcliffe stormed home to win the New York Marathon. For 25½ miles, Radcliffe was shadowed by Gete Wami of Ethopia who followed Radcliffe’s every move. Throughout the race Radcliffe tried several times to shake her opponent, gaining a slight advantage only to see it disappear.
In the final 800m, Wami finally drew even with and slightly ahead of Radcliffe, but then seemed to back off. It wasn’t so much Wami backing off, it was Paula surging ahead – she answered with a final decisive move. This time Wami could not answer. “I’ve been there so many times,” Radcliffe said. “I was determined it was my turf.” She finished the race in 2 hours 23 minutes 9 seconds, winning in the end by 23 seconds.

Last year, Lance Armstrong described the 2006 ING New York Marathon as “the hardest thing I’ve ever done”, but vowed to return and run again in 2007

. True to his word, Lance trained harder and smarter, and ran an impressive 2 hours, 46 minutes, 43 seconds to finish in 698th place – 13 minutes faster than last year!
“I enjoyed it much more this year,” said Armstrong, who finished 698th in 2 hours, 46 minutes, 43 seconds. “Last year, I had no idea what to expect with 26.2 miles, and I paid for it.”
About 130 runners competed in the marathon for Team LIVESTRONG, which raises funds for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. The group expected to bring in more than $500,000 dollars for cancer research and programs.
This year Armstrong looked fresh in his yellow jersey at the finish – a stark contrast to last year where he hobbled home in 856th position with painful shin splints – a condition he needed about four months to recover from! This time, he trained more consistently and puts his success down to faster 18 and 19 mile runs.

Ok, it’s 7:45pm on the eve of the Marine Corps Marathon – the race I’ve spent the last 16 weeks training for. I’ve been thinking about a challenging goal all week and today have finally decided on a starting, and hopefully ending, pace which will bring me a new PR (personal record). It won’t be easy and the secret will be to start off at the right pace – any slight deviation will bring about a repeat of last year’s race where I “hit the wall” badly at about the 20 mile mark.
So here goes. Tomorrow’s goal will be a 2:50:30 for the 26.2 mile course, which is an average 6 minutes 30 seconds per mile. My previous best time is 2:51:00 set at the Charlotte Marathon last year. It’s certainly not going to easy, especially with the weather forecast calling for moderate to high winds.
Whatever happens, it’s going to be a great experience. The “People’s Marathon” is a fantastic event and the crowd support and network of volunteers is superb. Hopefully this time tomorrow I’ll be celebrating a good finish time, but no matter what the clock reads at the finish, I’ll know I’ve given it my all.download booty call divx college road trip dvd

I’ve successfully worn the earlier Brooks ST2 model in 3 previous marathons, and each time had a good race. There’s just enough cushioning and a tiny amount of support that doesn’t impact my otherwise neutral running style. According to the Brooks web site, the ST3 is “ideal for tempo training and race distances from 5K to marathon” and I would have to agree 100% with their statement.

Week 16 – October 22nd, 2007
Here it is – the final week of the FIRST Marathon Training Program! Just 2 more workouts and then it’s time for the Marine Corps Marathon. Here’s the plan for the week:
Key Run Workout #1:
10-20 minute warm up
6 x 400m (400m Recovery Interval)
10 minute cool down
Key Run Workout #2:
3 mile run @ PMP pace (Planned Marathon Pace)
1 mile easy

The 2 workouts should be just enough to keep me active and focused on the job in hand, but not enough to break down any valuable muscle tissue. I plan to run Tuesday and Thursday which will give me a full 2 days rest before race day.
