2006 Boston Marathon to use wave start

Boston Marathon Finish Line

The 110th Boston Marathon will change it’s start format in 2006 and release the anticipated 20,000 runners from Hopkinton in two, 10,000-runner waves. The elite males and about 9,900 other men and women will set off from the usual start line at 12:00 noon. The rest of the field will start 30 minutes later at 12:30pm.

In previous years there’s been big trouble in little Hopkinton with runners relieving themselves on residents lawns, dropping trash everywhere and generally abusing the area. The 2 wave start will also alleviate congestion in the early stages of the race where it can typically take 30 minutes to even make it to the start line. This year each wave is expected to only take 10 minutes to get to the start.

The elite female race begins at 11:31am, with the wheelchair division setting off 6 minutes earlier at 11:25am on April 17th, 2006. This will be the 110th running of the famous 26.2 mile race.

I’ve still yet to decide whether I’ll be on the start line with the 20,000 runners. I ran 2 qualifying times last year at the Shamrock Marathon in March and the Frederick Marathon in May, so that’s the hard part done. If I’m going to be there I’ll need to register soon as the race is filling up fast.
