Chocolate Milk: The All New Recovery Drink!

Chocolate MilkAre sports recovery drinks all they’re cracked up to be, or is good old low fat chocolate milk just as effective?

A study in 2006 by James Karp M.S. (published in the International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism), discovered that the ingestion of chocolate milk immediately after intense training “reported a significantly greater time to exhaustion (minutes) and a significantly greater total work output (kilojoules) as compared with (a popular) carbohydrate replacement drink.”

To summarize, “adding protein and antioxidants to a carbohydrate beverage could help to decrease muscle soreness which also could help with recovery.”

I’m a firm believer in consuming recovery drinks after an intense workout - my personal favorite is Recoverite by Hammer Nutrition. Recoverite supplies your body with the proper 3:1 ratio of complex carbohydrates and the highest quality whey protein isolate, along with generous amounts of multi-beneficial glutamine, but maybe I should try chocolate milk after my next long run?!

Whatever your preference, the bottom line is that sports nutrition is critical if you wish to train effectively day after day. Within ten minutes of finishing your workouts, you should consume a fluid that helps with rehydration as well as offers some protein for rebuilding broken down tissues. Both Recoverite and chocolate milk will do the trick!
