Easy running, rest and recovery

After Saturday’s 5k, Sunday’s 10 mile tempo run and Tuesday’s track workout, I decided to treat myself to 3 easy days in preparation for Saturday’s Elizabeth River Run in Portsmouth, VA. To keep my running streak going (currently 177 days), I just needed to do 2 miles per day, which made a welcome change from some of the quality sessions of late.

Looking back, I think my 5k time from last Saturday told me I wasn’t as sharp and recovered from marathon training as I thought I was, so hopefully the rest has been beneficial. Actually, yesterday I came down with a stomach bug which wiped me out for the day, but today I’m feeling much better and have been able to eat and drink properly.

I’m hopeful to set a new PR (currently 37:07 set in 2003), so I’m going to need to average 5:57 per mile. I plan to be around 6:00 pace for the first couple of miles, and then step it up for the second two thirds of the race. Hopefully I can get quicker as the race develops.

Today the temperatures reached the mid-90s for the first time this year, and could well be a major factor tomorrow. I like the heat, and usually run well throughout the summer months, but today was the most oppressive it’s been since last year. Maybe the storms will come to clear the air and the conditions will be perfect?? We’ll see tomorrow I guess.
Anyway, watch this space for my race report and a Garmin Viewport of the race.
