Marine Corps Marathon pace band

Marathon Pace BandWell, with race day less than a week away, I find myself thinking about the marathon and planned race pace. I decided on a two week taper and therefore didn’t run many miles at all last week - a total of 29 with a longest run of 10 miles yesterday. I don’t feel 100% ready, but then again I don’t think anyone does during the taper. All kinds of nagging doubts creep in and you have to keep reminding yourself you’ve done all you can at this stage (assuming you actually have done all you can of course!). One of my usual pre-race rituals is to print off a marathon pace band, which outlines each mile split based on expected finish time. Here’s how you can get your own band…

A quick Google for marathon race band will return loads of results. However, my current favorite is the band offered by Runner’s World UK. You can actually use it for 6 different race distances from the 5k to the marathon, choose miles or kilometres as your split unit and also factor in the time it takes to reach the start line if you’re competing in one of the big marathons.

Instructions are simple:

  • Click here to make your Runner’s World Pace Band
  • Enter your target time in hours, minutes, seconds
  • Enter anticipated time to cross the start line in hours, minutes, seconds
  • Choose your race distance
  • Choose the split unit
  • Click “Create Pace Band”
  • Print the page
  • Cut along the border of the Pace Band
  • Waterproof the pace band by covering both sides with clear tape
  • Wrap the band around your wrist, covering the bottom tab with the top edge of the band. I usually use a piece of velcro on both ends to secure the band
  • Have a great race and stick to the goal!
