MotionBased Viewport for Garmin Forerunner 305
One really cool feature of MotionBased is the ability to create a Viewport from an activity. The Create Viewport link is located on the Activity Options screen and allows you to to generate HTML Code that you can cut and paste into a page on another site (or blog) to allow others to see a small preview of the activity. It also provides linking to the activity on MotionBased to explore in detail, just like the “email activity” functionality at the top right of the screen.
Once you’ve selected (see below) the Map Background Type (Street GDT, Street NAVTEQ, Basemap, Photo, Contour, Topo, Elevation or Satellite), the Map Size in pixels and the Preferred Unit (Metric or Imperial), click on the Generate button and the magic happens in front of your eyes.

The four Viewports generated are as follows:
1. Complete Viewport - shows map preview, MotionBased logo, activity summary and elevation profile.

2. Main Logo - the MotionBased logo which links to the activity.

3. Map Only - shows a map only preview and link to the activity (size can be changed in the preferences before you click Generate.

4. Activity Name Link - shows a text link to the activity.

To the right of each option is the HTML code you’ll need to add the Viewport to your web site or blog. Make sure you select all the code and then copy/ paste into your favorite text editor.

My only criticism? I’d love to be able to resize the Complete Viewport down to about 460px to fit the content area of this blog. Currently it’s generated at 530px which causes all sorts of problems with my right-side navigation. My only solution is to take a screenshot of the Viewport and manually link to the activity. Kind of defeats the purpose doesn’t it?
If anyone knows how to change the size, I’d really love to hear from you (and no, it’s not as simple as edting the code to read width=”460px”). Please feel free to leave a comment below….and Happy Viewporting!

[…] Today the temperatures reached the mid-90s for the first time this year, and could well be a major factor tomorrow. I like the heat, and usually run well throughout the summer months, but today was the most oppressive it’s been since last year. Maybe the storms will come to clear the air and the conditions will be perfect?? We’ll see tomorrow I guess. Watch this space for my race report and a Garmin Viewport of the race. […]
