Pioneer Pride 5k

Map of Pioneer Pride 5kThe Pioneer Pride 5k was a fairly late addition to the Tidewater Striders Running Grand Prix. I hadn’t planned on racing it, but changed my mind when I realized GP points were up for grabs. I’m halfway through my taper for the Frederick Marathon and figured a bit of speedwork wouldn’t hurt - at least I didn’t have a long run this weekend anyway.

Last week I was able to break 18 minutes for the first time this year, so that was the immediate goal again today. I ran 2 miles of the course as a warm up and felt fairly confident - temperatures were good and the wind was minimal. 9:00 o’clock race time came around fast and before I knew it we were off. I held 6th or 7th place for the first half mile and then started to make a move on the runners ahead. By the 2 mile mark I was in 3rd place and on pace for a 17:45, all I had to do was keep the cadence high and stay as relaxed as possible.

With less than a quarter mile to go I could hear the 4th place guy closing in on me, and it took a huge effort to hold him off for the final stretch. As I crossed the line the clock ticked 17:44 and I’d run my fastest 5k since last July. Click on the map above to see more detailed stats of the race.

For the record I was 3rd overall about a minute behind the winner! (results)
