Running Review: February 20th-26th

  • Monday (am): Brisk morning run in the snow (just under 4 miles, quads a little sore from Saturday’s 30k).
  • Monday (pm): Runervals 10k Strength Builder (7.5 miles - 5mph BP, 7.5mph “10k speed”).
  • Tuesday: Easy 4 miles on the treadmill (with 30 second striders).
  • Wednesday: Just 2 miles on the treadmill as part of Spinervals Ride and Stride.
  • Thursday: Early morning run (about 6.75 miles). Easy pace.
  • Friday: Easy 4 miles on the treadmill (with 30 second striders).
  • Saturday: 2 mile warmup on grass.
Mud In Your Eye 8k (30:30 - 12th overall, 3rd age group, over a minute faster than last year. 3rd in age group for the 3 race series.)
  • Sunday: 23 mile long run at First Landing (7:44 pace). 1st 13 miles 1:42:30, 2nd 10 miles 1:15:11
  • 58.1 miles for the week

Summary: Very pleased with Saturday’s 8k race. Went through 3 miles in 17:58 (sub 6:00minute pace) and had a strong last couple of miles. Passed several tiring runners and still had something left to kick it in for the finish.
Sunday’s long run started off badly. Had to return to my car to change shoes after just half a mile. I’ve been having problems since last week’s 30k when I tied a shoelace too tight, and this made every step a painful one. After switching to my Puma Trailfox trail shoes I set off again and ended up running 23 miles @ 7:44 pace. Good confidence booster and a chance to experiment some more with the Hammer Gel fuel I intend to use at Shamrock. Temperature was only 34°F (just over 1°Celsius) and the wind was 15-20mph from the North.
