Last night’s 30 minute run turned out to be a steady effort on the treadmill. The weather turned bad on the way home from work and I didn’t really fancy the threat of a wet and windy run outside. As usual, the treadmill run was pretty mundane and uneventful, but at least it was another 30 minutes with no foot pain.
In contrast, the weather today was much nicer. Up in the 70s, breezy, but sunny. I spent most of the day catching up on a few chores and by the time the afternoon rolled around I was ready to get outside in the sunshine. With 3 easy runs behind me this week, I decided to push myself a bit today and see what sort of fitness base I have right now.
The first mile was mainly into a brisk breeze and at around 7:30 pace felt quite easy. No problem with the foot so I picked it up a bit – a 6:29 mile. I’m breathing pretty hard by now, but still feeling good. The next mile was another 6:29, getting tougher now but I’m only a mile from the house, so I try to pick it up again. I get back to the house with a 6:14 mile – completely out of breath and sweating a lot (sorry if that sounds gross). It feels hotter than it actually is (72°), and maybe I’m a bit dehydrated – I did drink a fair bit of coffee today after all.
So, all in all, a solid run, although I’m nowhere near as fit as I’d like to be. The only positive is I appear to have got over the injury completely and I can now feel more confident and work towards getting faster and stronger. I have a 10k race
next weekend, but it’s not enough time to get super fit. Incidentally, I wore my other new running shoes today – the New Balance 755. They felt great, are very responsive and have an abundance of cushioning in both the heel and forefoot (technical term: ABZORB®).
