Sunday afternoon run

Forerunner 305Sunday afternoon was a glorious day for a run - warm, sunny with a nice refreshing breeze. My first week back running after the foot injury has been a successful one, no pain and no problems whatsoever. The only thing I’ve experienced is a loss of fitness, but with a bit of effort that will soon come back.

My plan today was to run between 6 and 8 miles. I’d be happy with 6, but if I could stretch it to 8, that would be a bonus. As I mentioned above, it was a perfect day for a run. Although the temperature was around 80°, the breeze made it feel cooler and it was just nice to pound out the miles. I hit most of my usual routes and ended up running through a few fields and then onto a network of soccer (I mean football) pitches. Trying to avoid the roads, the concrete and the asphalt is an important part of my recovery plan, so I always aim to try to find as much grass and trail as I can (which isn’t always easy so close to the house).

Things went well up until just past the 4 mile mark. I had intended running 4 miles and then turning around to retrace my steps back to the house. However, I could feel a slight pain in my foot starting to develop, so I decided to cut the run short and found a 2 mile “shortcut” home instead. The last thing I wanted to do was risk further damage.

Anyway, with a fast last mile (I think the wind must have been behind me the whole way), I made it home safely. My foot wasn’t too sore, but I soaked it in a bucket of ice just in case. It was at this stage I realized how thirsty I was too. The summer is almost upon us and I’ll need to pay more attention to my hydration - it’s surprising how much fluid you can lose even on a 6 mile run.

Think I’ll ride my bike tomorrow night and give my foot a rest. It probably needs it…

Mile splits: 7:40, 7:20, 7:22, 7:02, 7:03, 6:56
