Welsh Athletics Centenary Celebrations

Welsh AthleticsWelsh Athletics celebrated 100 years since the first Welsh Track and Field Championships was held in 1907, and took the opportunity to induct five members into their newly created hall of fame.

The “Famous Five” are Dame Tanni Grey Thompson, Colin Jackson, Lynn Davies, Steve Jones and John Disley. All were present to join in the celebrations.

Ken Harris, Wales’ oldest living champion, aged 97, was also given a lifetime achievement award by Welsh athletics.

Steve Jones is probably my favorite Welsh Athlete. In 1984, he ran his first competitive marathon in Chicago, coming in at 2 hours 8 minutes and 5 seconds, thus breaking the world record. Jones, known as “The Fox” for his ferocious running right from the gun, also won Chicago the following year in a time of 2 hours 7 minutes 13 seconds - an agonizing 1 second outside Carlos Lopez’s standard!
