A wet and windy Thanksgiving Turkey Trot 10k

Turkey Trot 10k

Quick post before our Thanksgiving celebrations begin. Ran the Turkey Trot 10k this morning in Virginia Beach, Virginia. It was cold, wet and windy but there was still a good turnout - many local runners, but also a good deal of runners from out of town (presumably visiting relatives for Thanksgiving).

Anyway, the plan today was to break 37:00 minutes for the first time and record another PR. During my warm up it was clear this wouldn’t be an easy goal in today’s conditions - the rain almost horizontal and the wind gusting up to 16mph.

Things went well for 4 miles, slowly working my way through the runners ahead who had started too fast. The last 2 miles were tougher, but as long as I ran around 6:00 minutes I knew I’d be able to break 37:00….

Around Mount Trashmore lake the wind picked up, the rain came down harder and the muddy terrain made things difficult. It was nice to get back on the road and see the YMCA in the distance. With the driving rain in my eyes, I couldn’t see the clock as I crossed the finish line. It was only a minute or so later I looked at my Forerunner 305 and read 36:34 - another PR by about 30 seconds. 1st place in my age-group and 7th overall.

Splits: 5:45 5:46 5:49 5:55 5:59 6:02

Happy Thanksgiving everyone and enjoy the turkey!
