Ironman USA Lake Placid Swim Course [2.4 miles]
Well, as race day approaches, I’m starting to think more and more about what I have ahead of me. The 2.4 mile swim will be the first challenge of the day. Initially when I signed up for Ironman USA, the swim leg concerned me the most. I’ve never been a strong swimmer and the days of not being able to swim 50m in one effort are not too distant a memory. Now I have 2×1.2 mile loops of Mirror Lake to get through before I can even think of the 112 mile bike ride and 26.2 marathon.
From what I’ve read and heard from people I talk to (thanks Burley!), Mirror Lake is crystal clear, calm and clean. It is used for several different water events so there are permanent underwater ropes connected to buoys along the whole length of the course. Apparently there are flags attached to the buoys every 100m so you know exactly where you are all of the time. The only possible downside is everyone knows all about the magic ropes, so I’m sure it’s going to be really crowded on the inside.
Anyway, the training has been done and it’s too late to change anything now. I’m looking forward to arriving in Lake Placid and getting a few short practice swims in before race morning. Hopefully that will ease any fears I have before the longest swim of my life!
