Gmail file attachments now 20MB

GmailProbably old news to most of you, but I just noticed that Google are now allowing you to send and receive messages up to 20 megabytes (MB) in size via Gmail. My initial thoughts were “Great, about time”, then I realized the increase will probably only be useful for sending large attachments to other Gmail users - for example, most of my friends and family use various email accounts with smaller file limits (usually 5MB and 10MB). With the increase in popularity of digital photos and videos, and more and more people wanting to share their masterpieces, the 20MB limit makes sense.

What maximum attachment size are you restricted to with your current email provider?

By the way, not sure how easy it is to sign up for a Gmail account at the moment, but if anyone’s interested, I have 98 invites left in my account. Just leave a comment and I’ll get back to you.

That’s great that they upped it. I hadn’t thought about that it’s pretty much only good for sending large files to other gmail members, good point. Most mail services have smaller size limits.

I’m sure this will force the hand of many of the other email providers. I wonder who’ll be the first to counter the increase? Yahoo! or Hotmail perhaps?

      Thanks for the comment,

This is a great possibility, but, just as you said, a lot of people can’t receive a 20 MB attachment.

This is really great news, especially if we want to send youtube video clips by gmail and other large file sized documents. The trend is certainly up, up, up. In time there will be no need for big hard drives for storage on pc’s as we can keep everything in cyberspace vaults.
