Wales in the World Cup?
Not for a while…..
With World Cup 2006 fever hotting up all the time, you might be wondering why Wales aren’t battling it out in Germany at the moment.
Well, despite being founded 130 years ago in 1876, the Welsh football team has only qualified once for the World Cup final stages. The year was 1958 and ironically they were quite lucky to make it. The Welsh had been eliminated in the qualifying rounds but were recalled when no opponent could be found for Israel in the Asian qualifying competition. After a solid run they were finally eliminated by Brazil in a tight 1-0 quarter final defeat.
The closest since 1958 was when Wales were within a penalty shot against Romania of making it to USA ‘94, but Paul Bodin’s miss put paid to their campaign.
Maybe 2010 will be a lucky year for the Welsh??
